Gracenote as you may know is a huge music database that most online computers access as soon as a CD is put into a disc drive. Your computer queries Gracenote and it responds with the detailed artist and album information.
Anyway, someone sent me a link today of a feature that Gracenote has on their site: an interactive map that will show the top 10 artists and albums from each country, based on how often Gracenote gets queried by a CD being popped into a computer in that country. The results are interesting:

It also breaks it down by states in the case of the US. Check out how popular Britney Spears is in Eastern Europe, and how the Beatles are on top in almost every single country. Obviously this isn't a perfect report since it includes only those who listen to music or rip it using their computer, but it's interesting nonetheless.

I checked this out. I'd be anxious to know how they calculate "top artists" as it looks like not a single Beatles or Zep album appears in the top 10 for any state.
More amusingly, Russia's #2 artist: RAMMSTEIN! Good to know someone still appreciates a band that ROX.
Also, Japan's #5 artist: "BUMP OF CHICKEN". If you don't believe me, check it yourself.
I looked for Mohd Rafi in India, but I guess he's not so contemporary any more. I also noticed that you can't watch his video "Baar Baar Dekho" on You Tube. 3rd party copyright legal stuff or something. My day was ruined! I usually start the day with his video.
