The incredibly fit, eminently quotable, and always sunny Jack LaLanne is dead at 96. I have loved him since I heard an interview 10 years ago, when he was a spry 85. I guess you could say he is an idol of mine, not so much as an example of fitness, but of self-discipline. There's a retrospective on NPR that I think suits his personality:

My favorite quote: "I've got only one enemy. Jack LaLanne." The picture of him and his wife from last year is also excellent.

I love Jack but I've gotta admit, my first exposure to him was from the inescapable juicer ads from the 80s and early 90s, and that's always tied to my memory of him:

I remember watching my mom do workouts to Jack LaLanne. He was a hero to her. You would have to say his philosphy bore fruit if you consider long life as proof. Personally I don't think you can extend your life...it's pre-determined in my opionion...but you can definately effect the quality of your life while you're here.
You might say both he and my mom benefited from his lifestyle advocacy.
PS...I think he looks like Ruth Gordon.
